Indigenous scholar, Judy Atkinson, says in her book ‘Trauma Trails, Recreating Song Lines,’ that land is a “story place,” provoking me to think about the stories of my own ancestors who traced lines over the land, tying me to it. In so many ways, the lines of my ancestors have inflicted trauma after trauma for Indigenous Australians. As I think about it, I feel a mix of love for my ancestors, and thankfulness that their paths have led me to be the person I am, belonging to the place that I do; and I feel sadness and pain about the role many of them played in Australia’s story, marginalising the people whose history on this land predates our own. I have been thinking and praying about this a lot recently, prompted by a paper I wrote in a cross-cultural counselling class a few months ago. I thought today was a good day to share some of my incomplete thoughts. And also to offer this acknowledgement. Thanks to Common Grace for providing the words, and the encouragement to do this.
