Dear Deputy PM and Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce

The proposed Shenhua mine will blow a 35 square km hole in the heart of Australia's food bowl. It risks thousands of years of future farming for a 30 year mine that will make climate change worse. As a steward of this precious land, I urge you to stop the mine.

I don’t want the earth to suffer at the cost of profit – we need to be investing in fossil fuel alternatives. Australians are smart people – I know we an find a solution to this problem without building mines all over the place!

Don’t risk long term sustainability of the best agricultural land, and its water supply, for short term profit.

I want my grandchildren to have food and a climate that they can enjoy, not starvation in a land that needs extra cooling.

The wilful destruction of our food future, of the land’s capacity to regenerate and support life is the most rebellious act of humanity against God’s creation. Barnaby please stop this desecration before it becomes your legacy.

We need to be good stewards of our land and water for future generations. It is part of God’s Good Creation to be cherished and cared for.

A mine in our country’s food bol? What can you be thinking? When all our land is gone you will find we can’t eat money.

To avoid a 2C temperature rise 80% of coal must stay in the ground. New coal mines must not be developed. The age of coal is over. There are many renewable energy options which do not damage farming, land and precious water which are essential to life.

Our continued use of fossil fuels (and especially coal) as an energy source is turning up the Earth’s thermostat (the evidence for which is irrefutable), thereby making it less habitable for my children, grandchildren and future generations.
