Letter sent on behalf of Common Grace to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Monday 25 August 2025

Dear Prime Minister,
We write to you as the Common Grace movement – a diverse community of tens of thousands of Australians committed to Jesus and justice.
We believe all people are created in the image of God and are called to love our neighbour and care for God’s creation. That means acting urgently and courageously on climate change - for the flourishing of all people and all creation.
Right now, your government is shaping Australia’s next climate policies and our 2035 emissions reduction target. This is a critical opportunity to chart a path that protects our land and communities from worsening climate impacts.
The science is clear. Here in Australia, we are already experiencing devastating climate-fuelled disasters – fires, floods, droughts, and extreme heat – harming lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems. These impacts are not just environmental concerns; they are matters of justice, with the greatest burden falling on those least responsible and least equipped to respond.
As one of the world’s highest per-capita emitters, Australia has a responsibility to act - to protect First Nations peoples, our Pacific neighbours, and future generations who are already bearing the brunt of climate impacts.
We urge you to set a strong, science-informed emissions reduction target. This should be as close to net zero as possible, to keep global warming below 2°C and to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
Such a target is essential to protect the people and places we love, to ease the growing burden on families facing rising insurance and energy costs, and to transition to cleaner, more affordable energy sources. It is also a chance for Australia to lead with integrity, contributing to global efforts to care for our common home.
In the lead-up to the 2022 election, you promised a legacy of action on climate. With Labor’s historic re-election this year, many in our movement felt a deep sense of hope that these efforts would be accelerated and that Australia would respond to the challenges of the climate crisis with the urgency that it demands.
This is your moment to demonstrate your commitment to these promises.
May your leadership be marked by courage, compassion, and care for creation.
And together, may we continue to work towards a future of flourishing for all.
In faith and hope,
Gershon Nimbalker and Jane Kelly, on behalf of Common Grace
