Today, I join with many other Australians to acknowledge the Aboriginal peoples on whose land I have lived, paying respect to their elders – past, present and future. My mother grew up on Wonnarua land. My father grew up on Wiradjuri land. I have lived on Eora, Ngunnawal and Ngarigo lands. I have spent time with family living on Wajuk, Wangkathaa, Jukun, Awabakal, Tyerrernotepanner, and Bundjalung lands. We have been able to live our lives here as Australians because land (and life) was taken from these peoples. Nothing we do or say can change the fact that we have benefited from oppression of the Aboriginal people.


It seems simple logic to me that we ought change the date of Australia Day. By celebrating the anniversary of invasion and colonisation, we exclude from celebration the Aboriginal peoples who have been traditional custodians of this land for tens of thousands of years. In doing so we imply that their history and experience is unimportant. Their stories matter. I will stop, listen, and hear them.
