Today, I take the opportunity to acknowledge the Turrbal people who are the Australian Aboriginal nation who owned and lived in the region of present-day Brisbane before European settlement. They were a small group within the larger nation of Jagera in the south of the North Pine River, west of Moreton Bay and Tingalpa Creek, north of the Logan River, and east of Moggill Creek area. The Jagera name for the Brisbane region is Meanjin which means ‘spike,’ and was the name for the finger of land extending from the city to the Botanic Gardens and university.
I pay my respects to their elders past, present and future, and acknowledge that many Aboriginal peoples are hurting and mourning on this day with good reason. I pray that all Australians will work together to create a new, united future where we can truly celebrate together the blessing of this amazing country we inhabit.
