I thank the Aboriginal people for their custodianship of a land that has become home to countless peoples from nations all around the world. I thank my fellow non-indigenous Australians for helping to develop a culture of mateship, belonging and a fair go to all people, regardless of class or origin. These ideals are constantly being challenged but today, on Australia Day, I embrace my fellow country people and believe in the purity of these ideals. Happy Straya Day everyone, enjoy your barbeques today and try to hug a stranger!
