On January 26th, we're inviting Australians to identify the traditional owners of the land they live on, then publicly acknowledge them with a Facebook post – you have a real chance to use your Facebook feed for good.

Perhaps “commemorate” Australia Day is more appropriate than celebrate … a new start for colonials, a foreboding day for our Indigenous peoples, and yet now a celebration of stumbling efforts toward an inclusive diversity in this young nation. It’s mixed, like most of life, but significant nonetheless. Until the date be changed (e.g. to Federation date), let’s grow in mutual understanding so we can truly celebrate together.

I acknowledge that in the past I have celebrated this day, in naivety, but nonetheless it was harmful and I will move forward by acknowledging my own actions and how they have contributed to this hurt.

I’m humbled to now know better. To my friends and loved ones that have contributed to my life, who today symbolises the genocide of their family and their people, I hope that more people are able willing and open to understand what this day represents and how much more needs to be done to right wrongs.
