I’m currently spending time in Cairo, Egypt. But the place I call home is the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora.
Doesn’t that sound… odd? Doesn’t really roll off the tongue, hey? What a shame. I even had to look up a map of Aboriginal nations/languages to make sure I got the right location accurate. Surely my ignorance and naivety speaks volumes to something… right?
Today marks the day Australian history (and many people) was wiped clear. For many Aboriginal peoples, this is a day of hurting and mourning. I will not listen to the cries that our solution lies in ‘moving forward’ and dismiss past realities; embracing all the ‘good’ things that have come with colonisation and tell. No, as much as I love this country (and my travelling has really helped solidify that), I will not dismiss the continual pain, injustice and hurt our brothers and sisters face.
You don’t think Australian has a racism problem like the states? Did you know that Aboriginal people account for 27% of the prison population, despite only making up 2% of the entire Australian population (Check ABS stats from 2015)? And don’t get me started on juvenile incarceration rates… in 2015 Aboriginal youth were 26 TIMES more likely to be in prison than any other youth on any given day (AIHW). These stats mean a lot of different things to different people, but surely we can all agree on one thing: the Aboriginal community is hurting; and I don’t blame them.
This 26 July I’m choosing to celebrate the Gadigal people of the Eora nation who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I live. My life in this country is indebted to you. I love this country, and that gives me a taste of how much more you love it. I thank you for not taking your revenge on me as a stranger, but welcoming me in. I celebrate your survival.
