Today, in Australia, is January 26th. For many it’s Australia Day. A day to kick back, have a barbie and a beer, and hang out with your mates.


But it’s also Invasion Day. Survival Day. A day marking the invasion of Australia by Europeans and the start of over 200 years of oppression and violence against the indigenous peoples. Over 200 years of erasure, of theft, of abuse, of genocidal efforts.


The indigenous peoples of Australia are the hereditary and traditional custodians of my homeland. They are present in place names, slang, our art and music, stories, our sports and culture, our entire culture and yet they are discounted and derided and unseen.


I offer respect to you. To the elders throughout their long history. To the warriors and caretakers, the scholars and storytellers, and the children. To those from the past, those today, and those still to come, I honour you. Your courage and strength are incredible.


I recognise that my privilege comes directly at a cost to you regardless of whether I realise it or not at the time and I deeply regret that. Although I currently live overseas, my heart remains at home and I wish to represent on behalf of the Aboriginal peoples. To offer my support.
