As Australia faces the growing impacts of climate change, alongside rising energy bills and broader cost-of-living pressures, the federal government has a critical opportunity in the upcoming budget to make big changes.
The federal government is currently considering a 25% tax on gas exports – which could generate around $17 billion every year.
Gas companies are currently making extraordinary profits, driven in part by global instability, while Australian communities bear the cost of rising energy costs and climate impacts.
Common Grace is part of the Renew Australia for All alliance, joining with organisations including the Australia Institute, Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) ACTU, ACF, Anglican Australia and Uniting to call for a 25% levy on gas exports.
If introduced, this levy could help Australia invest in essential services such as healthcare, education, housing and transport – easing pressure on families while building a more just and sustainable future.
Now is the moment to act.
As the Prime Minister has asked Treasury to model such a levy ahead of the May budget, we currently have a unique and urgent opportunity for action.
Can you call your MP today and tell them you support a gas export levy?
This moment offers a practical step we can take to love our neighbours in a time of economic and environmental strain.
