When you hopped out of bed this morning, on January 26, did you pause to consider the land on which you stand?

For many, January 26 is a difficult time. On this day, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters are feeling many emotions and are hurting, grieving, mourning, and commemorating survival. And today, we have a chance to stand with them, on the land we live, acknowledging the true history of this land.

Imagine if today - January 26, 2020 - Facebook feeds around the country were filled with photos and public statements acknowledging Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples and what this day means to them.

What a powerful statement it would be! A generation making a peaceful stand, on the very day when Australians reflect on their national identity more than any other.

Today, we all have an opportunity to make that stand, by sharing where we stand on January 26 and using our Facebook feed for good.

How do I take my photo?

We encourage you to take off your shoes and head outside to take a photo of your feet on the land you live on. If you're using your phone to take the photo, landscape orientation will work best (though you'll also be able to rotate it before posting). If you want you can also take a photo with a few people, and share it together. Then, write your acknowledgment of country (or use the one we provide), add it to this website then share it on your social media.

“Today, on this day of mourning, invasion and survival, I acknowledge the Wathaurong people, of the Kulin Nation, who are the Traditional Custodians on whose land I stand and pay my respects to the Elders past, present, and future. I stand in solidarity for truth and justice and to #ChangeTheHeart of Australia. To mourn on such a day as this and acknowledge the immense resilience and survival of Australia’s First Nations people is not to hate this country, but to love it so much that we want the truth be told so wounds can begin to heal and systemic oppression and racism can end. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land, and I am greatful to be able to tread upon it lightly and live here.”

“Today, a day that many of us celebrate as Australia Day, is instead for many a day of mourning, remembering invasion and survival. And so I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians on whose land I stand: the Dharawal (also Tharawal) people of the Eora nation. I pay my respects to the Elders past, present, and future. I pray, with God’s help, we will continue to work towards mending the bond and trust broken between our peoples. Amen”

“Since 1818, this day has marked the coming of the British in 1788 when they stepped on to Aboriginal land and claimed it for themselves. Because of that, my elders of Anglo-Celtic culture were here and lived in a time when the shameful crime of Terra Nullius was proclaimed. I was born on Kamilaroi country and raised on Darug country and now live on Darkinjung country, knowing that however I identify with and love this place, others went before me and know it better than I. Today, on this day of mourning, invasion and survival, I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians on whose lands and waters I stand and pay my respects to the Elders past, present, and future. We stand in solidarity for truth and justice and to #ChangeTheHeart of Australia. Common Grace”
