I also acknowledge that Aboriginal peoples have a strong spirit of survival, having survived for over 60,000 years.


I greatly appreciate the grace with which my Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander friends treat me, given that so much of what I have benefitted from is a direct result of the great injustices committed against them and their people since invasion 229 years ago. I am thankful for those who have helped open my eyes to the fact that not everyone’s experience of life (and of January 26) has been the same as mine. I hope to one day celebrate a national holiday on the day of the signing of a treaty, and gain no joy out of a holiday on the 26th.
