An Iraqi man who is being held at Villawood Detention Centre is facing imminent deportation back to Iraq, with his original application denied and his appeal dismissed on the technicality of being filed too late.
As Christians, we believe that Jesus instructs us to welcome the stranger, to show hospitality to those in need, and to love our neighbours. We long to see an Australia that is generous and compassionate to all people seeking asylum.
The man has been on a hunger strike and has diminished health as a result. He is known as "Saeed" (not his real name).
We have grave concerns that Saeed faces danger upon his return to Iraq, and that he has not had the access to justice in Australia that we consider fair.
Therefore:
How?
1. SHOW UP – in person at a Vigil at Villawood Detention Centre
2. SPEAK UP – by sending an email to the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton
3. SIGN – Sign this petition encouraging Qantas and Emirates to refuse to deport Saeed.
4. SHARE – the ONLY chance we have of saving Saeed is our politicians believing that the Australian people want it, so we need lots of people speaking up. Can you text, tweet, FB message or instatag 10 friends and ask them to also spread the word? And please always use the hashtag #SaveSaeed so that our efforts will be included as part of the wider community response.
