Why did you Walk for Reconciliation in the year 2000?
In May 2000 I was nine months pregnant with my firstborn, Matthew. Glen and I wanted to join the Walk for Reconciliation, but didn’t want to risk giving birth on the Harbour Bridge! We stood outside and watched a skywriter write a huge ‘sorry’ across the sky. (He ended up arriving 2 weeks late, so I could have walked…).
What has changed in the last 20 years?
We have tried to teach our children a more honest view of Australian history and the ongoing need for justice and reconciliation. Our nearly 20 year old son says “You have raised a boy who is truly sorry”.
What is your vision of Reconciliation for the next 20 years?"
In 20 years time, I hope to share this story with my grandchildren and marvel at how far we have come from simply saying we are sorry.
